The cycle route runs from Porthmadog to Barmouth, through oak woodlands and close to the sea. The brief was to create functional but imaginative seating that reflected this setting, creating distinctive features and resting points along the way.
In Penrhyndeudraeth I created two giant oak leaves that frame the entrance to the park.
At Llanbedr I created a series of ship’s timbers that provided multiple combinations of informal seating, bringing to life the boat building that once took place all along the coast in a past era. Unfortunately, the artwork has been destroyed by the local council and replaced by an uninspiring little bench straight out of a catalogue. The bench now speaks of……well nothing really.
My slate bench that references the River Artro as it flows through Llanbedr has (so far!) fared better. Sited outside the public toilets, it features text by Menna Elfyn and the water theme is complemented by railings that I designed to stop pedestrians stepping out into the road.
In Dyffryn Ardudwy I created three giant shells for play and seating, sited in the village playground.
Finally at Talybont I created a stack of large oak leaves that provide seating and visual intrigue.
