The new residential development Moulsham Lodge in Chelmsford required public art and seating that would draw residents and visitors into a communal space in a natural setting, but tucked away to the rear of the site.
The twisting vertical elements are up to 3 metre high and designed to be visible over the hedges and car parking spaces. The visual pull of the verticals draws the site-user into the grassed area. The organic quality of the verticals is given structure by the regularity of the deck beams, which establish a geometry that connects and unifies the space.
As the brief required minimal disruption to site, together with my engineers Rob Vint Engineering Ltd I devised a system of off-site prefabrication that allowed foundations and sculpture to be installed as one.
