In order to improve pedestrian access across the town, Caerphilly Council’s landscape architect Vicky Welchman had designed an imaginative flight of steps. They feature a flowing motif of buff, red and black bricks that echo the river flowing adjacent to the site, formerly an extensive coal mine. My sculptures and text provided anchor points and complementary features to this design.
My carved bricks build to create a pillar that includes the figure of a coal miner crouched within the form. Bi-lingual text by Gillian Clark and Menna Elfyn flows down the walls on either side of the steps, carved by South Wales Monuments of Caerphilly. A small pillar at the top of the extensive steps marks their entrance point on the High Street and provides the ‘source’ for Vicky Welchman’s river motif. The railings further develop this river theme.
