Caernarfon is famous for its castle, but the reason the castle is there is because of water. Two rivers flowing into the mouth of the Menai Straits created the location for an ancient settlement and a commanding site for Edward the First’s iconic castle. Reminders of ship building and quaysides for Welsh slates surround the castle and town walls.
I conceived of the benches as a linear device to lead the user along the waterfront and to provide a sense of place. They take inspiration from the shape of ships timbers and the specialist joints that are used in boat building. The huge oak slabs have an abstract simplicity that connects with the natural elements of wood and sea.
