A visit to hospital can be a very intimidating experience.Personal anxieties are laid bare in an unfamiliar, disorientating and extremely busy environment. I conceived of my sculptures for the courtyard in the new Rhondda Valley hospital as a series of curving walls and seating, creating personal sanctuaries in a very public space. Intimate seating places are created within an intriguing but legible overall scheme.
Made from layers of Welsh slate on a concrete core and with oak slab seating, the work connects notions of health, life and locality to the flow of the Rhondda River and the coal seams running below the ground.
