There is a long tradition of vertical markers in the landscape, such as Celtic crosses, standing stones and market crosses. We have many such markers in Wales and they have both physical and cultural significance. A town cross is also a social focal point – a gathering place, a focus for human activity and a symbol of the life of the town. My idea was to combine these historical and cultural references with a contemporary take on the Celtic cross.
The Landsker line that runs through Narberth divides the poorer soils of north Pembrokeshire from the richer soils of the south. This geology informs a cultural divide too, for the Landsker line also denotes the more Welsh speaking areas of the north from the more English south. I was fascinated by the possibility that I could make a physical representation of the abstract yet culturally significant Landsker line. Hence the two free-standing columns - separate, but reliant upon each other to create the full image.
