I worked on this project with stone carver Tom Clark, with whom I had successfully worked in Chepstow and Abergavenny, combining his intuitive approach to stone carving with my love of building up layers of stone strata. The brief required the design and construction of sculpted ‘dry-stone’ walls to create a sense of arrival at the new superstore. Together we devised a series of artwork walls that provides a unified public realm.
The walls were prefabricated in sections in my workshop, then lifted accurately into position. They vary in length from 5 to 8 metres, all with a maximum height of 1.3 metres and are made using sandstone and millstone grit stone sourced from a variety of Pennine quarries. Within each wall are bands of traditionally carved text and motifs that draw upon the history of the area, adding a layer of detail to the sculptural walls.
