The wetlands at Y Morfa were an under-used open space at the edge of Carmarthen centre. The brief was to create community access to the wetlands and pedestrian routes into the town. In 2016 I worked with Atkins to design an integrated landscape and artwork scheme, leading to me eventually creating a suite of gateways, benches, signage and waymarkers.
Created in windblown Welsh oak, the artworks draw upon imagery of water flowing across the levels of the floodplain, contrasting with the vertical presence of reeds, figures in the landscape and the Picton Monument on the hill above the site. Their organic quality enhances the experience of the surrounding land and creates focal points in what has now been transformed into a popular and widely accessed community asset.
